VII

THAT NIGHT WHEN SHE GOT HOME, Lacey wished she had someone, anyone, that she could talk to. She looked through the contact list on her phone and there was literally no one she could call. The only person she had a close connection with was Gretchen and she didn’t feel like she could talk to Gretchen about this. It would be unfair to put her in the middle of it.

She sat by the window in her kitchen and looked down at the street below. It was a still night and there was hardly a breeze in the air. She let all the facts she knew about the assignment revolve over and over in her mind. No matter how many ways she thought about it, she didn’t know what to do.

A lot of the things Sandra had said stuck in her mind. She knew what kind of woman she wanted to be. She knew why she’d gone into journalism. It wasn’t only to get away from her life in Las Cruces. It was also to make something of herself, to prove to herself and to the world that she was more than what she’d come from. She was more than a cheap whore and the daughter of a whore. She’d wanted to make a difference. She’d wanted to do something in the world that meant something. And it seemed that this was her chance. She was being asked by two powerful, respected, intelligent women to take on a difficult and dangerous assignment. They’d been honest with her about the risks it would pose, but they’d also told her that it would raise her career to a new level and that it would bring her into an entirely new league of professional possibilities. It could also make a real difference for the city of New York.

How could she pass that up? This story sounded like it actually mattered. It would show the rich and powerful men who ran the city that they were subject to the same social standards as the rest of society. Sandra certainly thought it mattered, and she knew more about the cogs of the intricate machine that was New York City than anyone Lacey had ever met. If the rich and powerful were somehow betraying the public trust, that was something that someone, a journalist, should be willing to uncover.

It would be something that she should be proud to be a part of. But how could she? The entire basis of the assignment was that she would disguise herself as a call girl. How could she be the best suited person on the entire staff to take on that role? What did that say about her? Why had Sandra chosen her? Was there something about Lacey that screamed out that she was a whore at heart?

Lacey had gone through hell when she was younger. She could still remember, in vivid detail, all of the things that she’d been forced to do before she’d gotten away from the motel.
